PUBLICATION ETHICS

Publications of APEQ

The following ethical principles apply to those who submit manuscripts for publication by APEQ (Associação Portuguesa para o Estudo do Quaternário / Portuguese Association for Quaternary Research) and to those who review or edit these manuscripts. Manuscripts may be published as articles of the Journal Estudos do Quaternário / Quaternary Studies or as book chapters of APEQ editions.

Author Inclusion

Only persons that gave substantive contribution to the manuscripts should have authorship recognition; all substantive contributors must have the option of being listed as co-authors.

A substantive contribution may arise from:

- Planning the research study;
- Active participation in the process of data acquisition;
- Active participation through the analyze and interpretation of the data;
- Writing the manuscript.

All co-authors must have read and agreed to the content of the submitted manuscript. Authors will not include co-author(s) that did not read and agreed with the contents of the manuscript in its various versions.

Authors will not add or delete co-authors from a manuscript submitted for publication with APEQ without consent of those co-authors. The publication editors must know of this consent.

Data and Copyright Issues

The commercial rights of the printed and online versions of the manuscripts published with APEQ are property of APEQ. The opinions and conclusions stated in each article are the exclusive responsibility of the authors and do not necessarily coincide with those of the APEQ and the editors of APEQ publications. The authors retain the copyright on their articles and are authorized to post them on their personal websites or in their institutional repositories.

When submitting a manuscript the authors are aware that manuscripts published with APEQ must be original work of the author(s) that have not been plagiarized (i.e. taken from previous sources without explicit acknowledgement).

Manuscripts must not present results and interpretations as new if they are under evaluation for publication elsewhere.

It is assumed that the authors have the right to manage and use the data included in the manuscript. When using ideas or results of other persons, authors will fully acknowledge the sources in the references section. If the ideas or results have not been published yet, permission must be obtained prior to manuscript submission.

Errors in research results or interpretations discovered after submission or publication must be promptly communicated to the editors.

Editor and Reviewer Roles

Manuscripts are reviewed by objective, impartial, and competent persons. Editors and reviewers will treat manuscripts under review as confidential, recognizing them as the intellectual property of the author(s).

Editors and reviewers should not have current or past interaction with the author or the author’s institution that may compromise objective evaluation of the submitted manuscripts.

Reviewer and editors will act promptly and ensure that the author’s research is published without delays that may be of advantage for reviewer/editors and their co-workers.

Privacy and Data Protection Issues

Personal data collected during the editorial management will be stored and processed by APEQ. This data will not be transferred to third parties except in cases established by Law.

Research Misconduct

APEQ considers research misconduct a serious flaw. In general APEQ follows the best practices of the Committee on Publication Ethics, which are available at http://publicationethics.org/flowcharts
